The Honorable Judge Vaughn R. Walker chose to ignore the common sense decision of the California voters and overruled Proposition 8.
Efforts to restore the long-standing tradition of marriage to the California Constitution will continue at higher levels of the judiciary. Hopefully, the obstinate judicial impulse to innovate will give way to the prudent principle of the prevailing historical understanding of marriage that has served the common good for generations.
“The respectful and reasonable distinction of marriage as the union of a man and woman should not suffer the discriminatory, intolerant disdain that some have sought to promulgate.”
Hysteria has, unfortunately, become the hallmark of California discourse. It is important for the Catholic community and all Californians of good will not to be intimidated into silence and accommodation. What we believe and what we have proposed throughout this campaign is sound and sensible.
There is a prevailing cultural confusion about sexuality and marriage. This is not a reason to retreat into some kind of pious isolation. We must continue to engage the civic discourse and enrich the conversation with the beauty and grace of the Catholic moral tradition about marriage and family.
El honorado juez, Vaughn R. Walker, publicó su decisión jurídica invalidando la Proposición 8. El juez impuso su opinión contra el sentido común de la mayoría de los votantes californianos a favor del matrimonio como la unión propiamente de un hombre y una mujer.
La decisión del juez será apelada a un nivel jurídico más alto. Esperamos un mejor aprecio por los principios prudentes y tradiciones razonables sobre el sentido sensato del matrimonio y la familia en las audiencias futuras.
Nos preocupa la polémica candente que ahora declara intolerables nuestros valores culturales y tratan de callar la voz de la razón. Todo esto no es motivo para ausentarnos del diálogo cívico. Con más intención, deberemos presentar nuestra afirmación por el matrimonio como elemento fundamental de la sociedad. Para nosotros los Católicos, no es simplemente una creencia, es la realidad que reconocemos: el matrimonio es el compromiso de un hombre y una mujer para amarse mutuamente y crear una familia. Esta realidad tiene un sentido personal, cultural y social. El propósito de la Proposición 8 era simplemente poner en palabras lo que cada uno reconoce por cierto.
Ofrecemos nuestro pensar como una contribución positiva a la sociedad en general, no como una imposición. Dialogamos y colaboramos para promover el bien común y la dignidad humana de todos.
