Catechist Ministry Day on Sept. 18 to focus on matrimony
More than 1,000 catechists, Catholic school educators, parish coordinators of religious education, youth ministers and others are expected to attend the Diocese of Sacramento’s Catechist Ministry Day on Sept. 18 at St. Francis High School.
“Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love” is the theme for the event, which begins with 8 a.m. registration and exhibits and concludes with Mass with Bishop Jaime Soto from 3 to 4:15 p.m.
John Galten, co-founder and president of the former Campion College, will be the keynote speaker in English. He chaired the religion department at Presentation High School in San Francisco and helped found the St. Ignatius Institute at the University of San Francisco in 1976, serving as assistant director and finally as director for five years until 2001.
Alejandro Aguilera-Titus will be the keynote speaker in Spanish. He is assistant director of the Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and a nationally-know speaker and wrier on the practical application of theological thought to pastoral ministry and formation.
Various workshops in English and Spanish will offered to catechists who work in parish faith formation programs, youth ministry programs, adult education programs and in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
Among the workshop topics are marriage preparation; teaching children about marriage; marriage-building parishes; the human family; catechetical principles for transforming minds, hearts and culture; the catechist’s toolbox, employing social media in catechesis; building respect life awareness; understanding the Mass for children; the liturgical calendar; spirituality and catechesis; salvation history; building small faith communities; the RCIA process; and cultivating family prayer.
Two youth ministry workshops will be offered during the day and youth ministers, coordinators, catechists and team members from across the diocese will gather for lunch in the campus ministry center.
Registrants are asked to choose the workshops in advance that they wish to attend.
The cost to attend is $30 per person with mail-in registration by Sept. 1 and $35 per person per mail-in registration after that date. Registration online saves you $5 off the mail-in registration price. The registration fee includes lunch. The high school is located at 5900 Elvas Ave.
