Fall Faith Formation Opportunities
for Adults Abound

 

Several adult faith formation opportunities are being offered this fall by the diocese, parishes throughout the diocese, the Catholic Distance University Online and the University of Sacramento.

Diocesan Pastoral Center — Institute Classes & Workshops

 

 

Diocese of Sacramento’s Scripture Institute, Cycle 1, “The Pentateuch”

Carson Weber, M.A. will be the presenter “In the Beginning…” on Sept. 16, 7:00-9:00 p.m.; “Noah, the New Adam” on Sept. 23; and “Father Abraham” for Sept. 30 at the Diocesan Pastoral Center. Chuck Zanetti, M.A. will present “The Twelve Tribes of Israel” on Oct. 7; “Oppression and Deliverance” on Oct. 14, and “Desert Wanderings and Purification” on Oct. 21. 2 hours of Renewal of Certification credit for each session.

 

 

 

Effective Coordinator’s Workshops, “First Reconciliation – Parents”

On Sept. 25, 9:30 a.m. – Noon, Stephen Matuszak, Director of English Catechesis will guide you in the choice of topics for “parent sessions” and will help identify a catechesis to help parents to prepare the children to encounter God’s mercy and forgiveness in the sacrament. Cost of the Workshop is $10. Attendance earns 2.5 hours toward Renewal of Certification.

 

 

 

NEW! Effective Coordinator’s Workshops, “First Reconciliation: A Family Process”

On Oct. 16, 9:30 a.m. – Noon, Sharon Laitinen, Coordinator of English Catechesis, will present a reconciliation program in which parents teach 50 percent of the program and become changed in the process. The elements that make this program successful will be given to add or enhance your own program. Cost of the Workshop is $10. Attendance earns 2.5 hours toward Renewal of Certification.

NEW! “A Scriptural Journey with Mary”

Holy Spirit Parish, Fairfield

All women are invited to this 12-week scriptural journey with Mary sponsored by the Fellowship of Catholic Christian Women at Holy Spirit Parish, Fairfield. “My Soul Magnifies the Lord” by Jeanne Kun focuses on ten important gospel scenes in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Session #1 begins Sept. 10, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and runs the second and last Tuesdays of the month until May. 24 hours toward Renewal of Certification in Scripture – New Testament; Blessed Virgin Mary.

Good Shepherd Parish, Elk Grove

Classes will be Saturdays, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm on Sept. 6, Oct. 4, Nov. 1, Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Feb. 7 and April 4. The first class on Sept. 6, “Who Are We? A Study of Christian Identity,” will be presented by Rev. Derek LaBranch. The cost is $25 per 8-hour course, or $175 for all seven sessions. All sessions held on Saturdays

Lunch break from noon to 1:00 p.m. Day begins with Mass at 8:00 a.m. The first session, Oct. 4, “A Walk Through the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church,” will be presented by Stephen Matuszak, S.T.L. “The Year of the Word of God & the Pauline Year: Insights for Christian Living”

St. Mary Parish, Sacramento

Rev. Dr. Joseph Pathrapankal, C.M.I., who has served on the Pontifical Biblical Commission, will be presenting this class on Saint Paul, Sunday, Sept. 7, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sacramento. 2 hours of Credit toward Renewal of Catechist Certification.

 

 

 

NEW! “Creative Catechist”

St. Patrick Parish, Jackson

Joan Nikolai, a Master Catechist, will show how to make lessons come alive with crafts, games and activities. She will also talk about Virtus Lesson Plans on Sept. 14, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., at Our Lady of the Pines, Pioneer. This begins a series of workshops, which include: “Birth of the Covenant,” Oct. 5; “Growing Pains,” Nov. 9; “Advent Time of Reflection, Dec. 13; “Jesus Fulfills the Covenant,” Jan. 11; “We Live the Covenant,” Feb. 8 and “Lenten Time of Reflection,” March 8. Attendance for each class will earn 3 hours towards Basic Certification.

Provides students with an essential understanding of the nature and historical development of Sacred Scripture. Students will examine the structure, content and authentic interpretation of Scripture as an effective means for evangelization, conversion, and dynamic growth in faith.

Introduction to the Catechism of the Catholic Church CCP 201
Students will be introduced to the content, origins and history of the classic catechesis as found in Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. The course will focus primarily on the four pillars of the Catechism: the Creed, Liturgy, Life in Christ and Prayer with an emphasis on teaching, or handing on, these truths to others. This course satisfies the Diocese of Sacramento’s requirements for basic catechist certification.

Passing on the Faith in the Modern Age CCP 217
Examines the methods, principles, skills and tools necessary to pass on the faith in today’s modern culture with confidence and vigor. Topics include evangelization and conversion, faith and moral development, learning styles and age-appropriate lesson planning. Modern technology and resource options for catechetical ministry will also be considered.

WEDNESDAY EVENINGS

 

Foundations of Catechetics EDU 602
Provides a graduate level study of the theological and historical foundations of passing on the faith in the life of the Church. The course will focus on the mystery of Christ and the mission of the Church as the basis for catechetical principles and ministry. Students will examine the early Church Fathers as well as the major Church documents of the 20th Century in the area of catechetics and evangelization.

The Role of Scripture and Liturgy in Catholic Faith Formation CCP 216
This course will consist of a study of the sacred liturgy (in light of Old Testament typology, the early Church Fathers and Church councils) with an emphasis on liturgy in the Church today. The essence and nature of the liturgy, as well as form and structure of the Mass, will be considered. The sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist will also be discussed.
