Individuals, groups donate $1.1 million to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti relief efforts
Individuals and groups in the Diocese of Sacramento have surpassed $1.1 million in their contributions for relief efforts to help people in Haiti after the devastating earthquake of January 2010.
Bishop Jaime Soto has received a letter from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America and Catholic Relief Services thanking the faithful in the diocese for their contributions.
To date, Catholic Relief Services has received $685,192 from the diocese’s Special Haiti Relief Collection and $454,557 from other groups and individuals residing in the 20 counties of the diocese. The Special Haiti Relief Collection for Catholic Relief Services is the largest special collection of its kind in memory, according to CRS officials, with more than $80 million in donations. Additional donations brought the grand total to more than $143 million.
In the months since the earthquake, CRS has distributed food and water to hundreds of thousands of people, while providing emergency shelter and medical care to many thousands more. A portion of the Special Haiti Relief Collection will be used by the USCCB to rebuild parish communities and church structures in Haiti.
