Bishop Jaime Soto Coat of ArmsRemarks at thanksgiving and accession mass

cathedral of the blessed sacrament

Most Reverend Jaime Soto,
Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento
Sunday, November 30, 2008

The following are reflections at the end of Mass and the transfer of the Cathedra.

“You, LORD, are our father, our redeemer you are named forever.  …  Return for the sake of your servants.”

…  Vuélvete, por amor a tus siervos.”

I am most grateful to Bishop Weigand.  He has been a vigilant and alert servant of the Lord.  It has been an honor to serve with him and to be guided by him during these last twelve months. Con el favor de Dios, with God’s favor may I be as vigilant and alert a servant.  May we look to each other and work together so that Christ may come to full stature in all of us.

We perform this simple gesture as the Church turns her attention to majestic coming of Christ, the Lord of all history and the tender Shepherd of souls.  I am reminded of the words from the 130th Psalm:

“I wait with longing for the LORD, my soul waits for his word.  My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak. More than sentinels for daybreak, let Israel look for the LORD, for with the LORD is kindness, with him is full redemption.”

Bishop Weigand has been an untiring gospel sentinel.  As I take his place at this watchtower in Sacramento I ask us all to keep our gazed fixed on the horizon for the Daybreak from on high. May we never weary of waiting.  May we never leave our longing for the good news gospel he brings is worth the wait.

May we become all that for which we long.  May the light of the Lord’s dawning shimmer on our faces.  May others see with joy and hope the morning glow of his kingdom shining in all we say and do.

Most Blessed Mary of Guadalupe pray for us.  Mantenga el ritmo de nuestra espera.  Stir in us always a long for your beloved Son, Jesus, now and until he comes in glory.  AMEN.
