Single Adult Ministry Mission Statement:

The mission of Single Adult Ministry (SAM) is to nurture a community of faith, hope and love for the never married, separated, divorced, and widowed. SAM promotes spiritual growth, Christian service, recognition of the role of singles in the diocese, and social interaction among single adults within the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento. SAM is under the Department of Evangelization and Catechesis, and promotes and supports other single organizations.

‘One Chosen and Called in Christ’ Pope John Paul II designated a jubilee day specifically for single persons throughout the world. He had a two-fold purpose:

(1) to celebrate the gift of single person’s in society and the Church, and

(2) to draw attention to the needs and gifts of single people in the Catholic faith community.

           
What is the definition of a “single person”?

Defining “single person” is not as easy as it might sound. Often an attempt is made to understand a single person as one who is not married, a vowed religious, or a priest. However, defining single persons by what they are not does not always speak to the diversity of the single population. Some are single by circumstance and some are single by choice. There are those who are single yet open to the prospect of marriage, religious life or priesthood, and there are those who feel called to live the vocation of the single life. Some find themselves single again after separation, divorce, or death of a spouse.
