World Youth Day 2008
World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and will be held in Sydney from 15-20 July 2008. At the conclusion of the XX World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany in August 2005, Pope Benedict XVI announced Sydney as the host for the XXIII World Youth Day. Organized by the Catholic Church, World Youth Day gathers young people from around the world to build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures.
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses," (Acts 1:8) is the theme for the XXIII World Youth Day and will be realized as young people gather from all over the world in a pilgrimage of faith to meet and experience the love of God. They will have an opportunity to rediscover their baptismal calling and the centrality of the sacraments of the Eucharist and reconciliation, and so discover a new apostolic zeal to witness more fully the Gospel in the modern world.
The Diocese of Sacramento is working with the (arch)dioceses of San Francisco, Monterey and Reno for a young adult pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Sydney. Archbishop Niederauer of San Francisco as well as several priests from the Diocese of Sacramento are planning to join us. Participants must be 18 years or older and out of high school by the date of the trip. The July 6-22, 2008 pilgrimage includes the "Days in the Diocese" host family stay in Christchurch, New Zealand in addition to the week in Australia for WYD. A “land-only” option is available for the Sydney, Australia World Youth Day portion, July 14-22, 2008.
