During the Mass, Geraldo Ranin promises respect and obedience to the bishop and his successors.

Bishop William K. Weigand ordained Geraldo Ranin to the priesthood Jan. 8 in an ordination Mass in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Bishop Weigand told the new priest at the ordination Mass that he will exercise the sacred duty of teaching in the name of Christ the teacher.

“Your mandate will be to impart to everyone and in every way possible the word of God, which you yourself have received with joy,” the bishop said.

“While continuing to meditate on the word of the Lord, make sure that you truly believe what you read, that you teach what you believe, and that you practice what you teach. If you do so, what you teach will be nourishment for the people of God.”

In celebrating the sacraments which sanctify the people of God, the bishop urged Father Ranin to “make sure you understand what you do and that you imitate in your own life what you celebrate.”

“As a celebrant of the mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection, you will need to strive to put to death whatever in you is sinful, and to live and walk in the newness of life, in the freshness of the grace and glory of God, whose son and agent you are,” Bishop Weigand said.

Father Ranin will serve as parochial vicar of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Carmichael.
