‘The church summons us to spiritual growth and new life’

Dear Friends,

As we prepare to begin Lent on March 1, we will be drawn back to the central theme of converting our minds and hearts to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This conversion process calls for a surrendering of what is evil or selfish in our lives (a dying) and a more complete opening up to the Lord’s call (a rising).

The Church summons us, individually and communally, to spiritual growth and new life in the Lord Jesus. We strive to die to self and sin in order that, together with the Risen Christ of Easter, we may rise renewed — changed, more grace-filled, more like Christ. In Lent, as we carefully review our lives, we also assess our relationships — with the Lord, with our families, friends, and others in general.

In order to foster our conversion of mind and heart, the Church urges us to fast, to pray, and to give alms with more fervor than during the rest of the liturgical year. (Please see the diocesan “Lenten Regulations and Admonitions” on page 16.)

Lent is also a time when we accompany the many catechumens and candidates who are preparing for full initiation into Christ and his Church at the Easter Vigil. Likewise, we strive to practice the works of mercy. All of us journey together, mutually supporting each other through prayer, example, and good works.

Let us eagerly take full advantage of the graced opportunity of this holy season. “Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.” (Joel 2:12-13)

Sincerely in the Lord,
