| Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Garcia officiated
at groundbreaking ceremonies the week of April 24 for new mausoleum construction
projects at three Catholic cemeteries in the diocese.
The mausoleum expansion involves projects at All Souls Cemetery in Vallejo, St. Mary Cemetery in Sacramento and Calvary Cemetery in Citrus Heights. Philip Niederberger, director of Catholic Cemeteries, said the collective projects, with a value of more than $20 million, will result in the initial construction of more than 4,200 crypts and 1,500 niches. Pre-construction sales have already reached 40 percent for all projects combined. The construction is part of the preliminary stage of the implementation of master plans for all three cemeteries, he said. Calvary Cemetery will have a two-phase expansion of its main chapel, extending the north and south sides, with 1,100 crypts inside and outside. Niederberger said the project could be completed by the end of the year. The initial project at St. Mary Cemetery will include 1,200 crypts by extending the existing architecture of the garden crypts along 21st Avenue and then border the northeast property line. The first phase of a new mausoleum at All Souls Cemetery will have more than 600 crypts. Phases two and three will include a chapel and mausoleum for a total of more than 1,900 crypts. “We are delighted to offer this unique form of entombment to the community of Vallejo to fulfill its current and future needs,” Niederberger said. Weather permitting, all of the projects should be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2007, he said. Catholic Cemeteries of the diocese consists of more than 50 diocesan and parish cemeteries. |
