Composers to present concert, workshop

Religious music composers Marty Haugen and Tony Alonso will present a concert and workshop at St. Clare Church in Roseville.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20 and the workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.

Haugen is composer in residence at Mayflower United Church of Christ in Minneapolis, Minn., and an adjunct professor at United Theological Seminary in New Brighton, Minn. He has made more than 30 recordings, more than 400 separate printed editions and served as a consultant and contributor to supplements for many denominations.

Haugen’s music is used in many Catholic and Protestant churches. For the past 25 years he has presented workshops and concerts throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Alonso is director of campus ministry at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. His music appears in several compilations and hymnals throughout North America.

Haugen and Alonso will conduct two morning sessions of the workshop on April 21 entitled “Our Life in Worship — Our Life in the World” and “To Serve as Jesus Did — An Inclusive and Ministerial Model of Community Worship.”

In the afternoon, Haugen will lead a workshop entitled “Musical Leadership, Music Ensembles and Liturgical Renewal.” Alonso will direct a workshop for youth leaders entitled “Building Bridges: Youth and Liturgy.”

Tickets for the concert are $30 per person. The cost to attend the workshop is $40 per person or $60 per person for both events. A discount of $5 is offered to those who purchase tickets before April 1 or per ticket if purchased in groups of 10 or more persons. A box lunch for $10 is available for purchase by reservation.
