Frederica Mathewes-Green, author of “Real Choices: Listening to Women, Looking for Alternatives to Abortion,” will be the keynote speaker at the 10th annual “Salute to Life” dinner Nov. 8 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in downtown Sacramento.

The dinner benefits the programs of the Sacramento Life Center, which provides support to women and teens facing unplanned pregnancies. The center provides free and confidential services, including a 24-hour help line, pregnancy testing, counseling and prenatal consultations with registered nurses.

Mathewes-Green has lectured extensively to numerous groups on life issues. She has appeared on national TV news programs and has also been a childbirth educator for nearly 10 years.

She will address what she considers “three bad ideas” that came of the feminist movement during the 1960s and 1970s, that have contributed to the proliferation of abortion services in the nation.

The board of directors of the Life Center also announced the recent appointment of Kathy Conner as the new executive director of the organization.

Conner has previously served as a volunteer with the center’s speaker’s bureau and pregnancy hotline during the 1980s, as board president in 1984-85 and as executive director in 1995-96. She most recently worked as a district manager for the Old Spaghetti Factory, managing restaurants in Roseville, Rancho Cordova and Stockton. She is a member of St. Rose Parish in Roseville.

Conner noted that the center “relies solely on donations in order to provide free, vital services to its clients.” She said the Salute to Life dinner is the center’s major fundraising activity and that many underwriting opportunities are still available.

The dinner will also include a live auction with master of ceremonies, radio broadcaster Paul Robins.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 per person or $750 for a table of 10.
